The Simple Things

I’m joining Rebecca Cooper, author of the blog, "Simple as That," and totally amazing photographer, in documenting the simple things in my daily life, the little things and the little moments that make me smile. Each week I’ll post a photo of something simple that made me happy the past week.

I already posted this photo when I blogged about fall leaves, but I think this is a perfect capture of the simple joy of playing in the fall leaves.

Fall Leaves

Fall has arrived in Denver. The temperatures have finally fallen a bit, no more 90 degree days. The leaves are falling and its time to rake them up so this weekend Edgar and Tristan set out to rake our yard. With Tristan's help it took Edgar quite awhile to rake them all up, but it sure was was a lot of fun. There was a lot of jumping, rolling, and throwing around of leaves. They were having so much fun that Noah and I went out to see what all the fun was about.

The Pumpkin Patch

A couple of weekends ago we went to the Anderson's Farm Pumpkin Patch. I have great childhood memories of going to and working at the pumpkin patch at my friend Becky's farm. Even though nothing will every quite measure up to Becky's pumpkin patch, Anderson Farm sure has a ton of fun activities to do. They have face painting, corn mazes, wagon rides, barrel rides, a playground, a petting zoo, and a big wooden train. The boys had a good time and got themselves good and tired out.

The Corn Maze

When we got to the pumpkin patch the first thing we did was wander through the corn maze. We had a blast. Tristan ran and ran and ran for at least 30 minutes. When I couldn't keep up with him anymore Edgar took his turn chasing him in the corn while I pushed Noah in the stroller.

All Aboard!

Tonight Tristan decided to play Choo Choo Train. He took his blue seat, his stuffed animals, his brother, Edgar, and I and put us in line to ride his Choo, Choo. At first he just sat in the conductor's seat shouting, "All Aboard!" but as his play went on the game got more and more complex. He used Noah's stuffed caterpillar as a seat belt and added wheels to the train by finding anything in the house that was round like... balls, Noah's rings, gene diaper bags etc. Next he became conductor AND repairman and would make crashing noises, announce the train was broken, get out of the "engine," look for the problem and "fix" it with his play drill. He went on like this for about an hour before we had to put him to bed. Needless to say he was NOT happy for bedtime.

Composting

Last year I bought some red wriggler worms to start a classroom compost bin. The worms spent the year in my classroom and at the end of the school year I brought the bin home and it spent the summer in our yard. The other day I took a look inside the bin and saw (to my surprise) they were still alive. To be honest, I hadn't looked at/fed them all summer, but Edgar had been taking care of them and teaching Tristan how to feed them food scraps. Now what will we do with them all winter?

In search of golden aspens...

Last weekend we set out to the mountains on a mission-to find aspen trees changing color. We heard that the drive to Golden Gate state park was a good drive to see fall foliage, and it isn't too far from Denver. Unfortunately most of the aspens had already changed from green to golden to gone, just a few straggling tree were still golden. Once we got to the park we decided to take a short walk anyways. Tristan enjoyed playing with the leaves that had fallen to the ground. We tried to keep Noah all bundled up because it was pretty chilly up in the mountains. On our drive home we say snow flurries falling on a distant mountain peek. Next year we'll have to try a bit earlier.
